Development of Web GIS-Based VFSMOD System with Three Modules for Effective Vegetative Filter Strip Design

چکیده
In recent years, Non-Point Source Pollution has been rising as a significant environmental issue. The sediment-laden water problem is causing serious impacts on river ecosystems not only in South Korea but also in most countries. The vegetative filter strip (VFS) has been thought to be one of the most effective methods to reduce the transport of sediment to down-gradient area. However, the effective width of the VFS first needs to be determined before VFS installation in the field. To provide an easy-to-use interface with a scientific VFS modeling engine, the Web GIS-based VFSMOD system was developed in this study. The Web GIS-based VFSMOD uses the UH and VFSM executable programs from the VFSMOD-w model as core engines to simulate rainfall-runoff and sediment trapping. Impact of Uncertainty on the Design of Vegetative Filter Strips
Design of vegetative filter strips for trapping sediment and sediment-borne chemicals can be done on a storm event basis using VFSMOD. This approach requires confidence in a number of input parameters such as soil infiltration characteristics, surface topography, vegetative composition and roughness, and incoming sediment load and particle size distribution. We have developed a simple program, ...
متن کاملAn Inverse Calibrator For VFSMOD-W Using The Global Multilevel Coordinate Search/ Nelder-Mead Simplex Algorithm
When designing vegetative filter strips (VFS) for trapping sediments, the modeler faces the challenge of identifying the appropriate model parameters for the specific application conditions. When possible, local runoff/sediment inflow/outflow through the VFS and precipitation data should be collected to support the modeling predictions. Although manual model calibration is often used, this proc...
متن کاملDevelopment of a simplistic vegetative filter strip model forsediment and nutrient retention at the field scale
Vegetative filter strips (VFSs) are a commonly used conservation measure to remove pollutants from agricultural runoff. The effectiveness of VFSs has been widely studied at the plot scale, yet researchers generally agree that field scale implementations are far less effective. The purpose of this research was to develop a field scale VFS submodel for the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). A...
متن کاملParameter importance and uncertainty in predicting runoff pesticide reduction with filter strips.
Vegetative filter strips (VFS) are an environmental management tool used to reduce sediment and pesticide transport from surface runoff. Numerical models of VFS such as the Vegetative Filter Strip Modeling System (VFSMOD-W) are capable of predicting runoff, sediment, and pesticide reduction and can be useful tools to understand the effectiveness of VFS and environmental conditions under which t...
متن کاملA design aid for sizing filter strips using buffer area ratio
Nonuniform field runoff can reduce the effectiveness of filter strips that are a uniform size along a field margin. Effectiveness can be improved by placing more filter strip where the runoff load is greater and less where the load is smaller. A modeling analysis was conducted of the relationship between pollutant trapping efficiency and the ratio of filter strip area to upslope contributing ar...
